Orpheus Centre

Orpheus is an independent specialist college for young disabled adults aged 18-25 with learning and/or physical disabilities. We are the only organisation that offers a personalised study programme in the arts and functional skills. Our focus is to build independence, communication and social interaction skills. We do this alongside supported housing and personal care on the same site. Our centre in Surrey is home to 28 live-in students and 22-day students.

Frankie’s Story

Students like Frankie thrive in our personalised study programme.  Frankie has a passion for art and music and at just 20 she developed acute axonal Guillain-Barre Syndrome. This left her unable to move her arms and legs. After neuro-rehabilitation, she joined Orpheus in her own supported housing flat. Her rehabilitation continued.

Supported by the Centre’s tutors she found an outlet for her creativity participating in our first art exhibition. A work experience placement in prop making and costume preparation resulted in commissions for her masks. Frankie is very involved in the art and design team for our theatre productions. She enjoys her role in set and prop design. She said, “I am all the stronger for what I have been through and Orpheus has played a big part in that too.”

Why support Orpheus?

Our students often have complex needs with a learning and/or physical disability. We focus on independence from the day they join Orpheus. The affect that an independent student has on their family, friends and community is immeasurable.  Everything we do focusses on maximising lasting independence for students like Frankie.

Your Support

As a charity, donations are essential for us to continue our work to change the lives of as many young disabled people as possible. We thank you for helping us do that by using The Giving Machine.
